A Little Bit About Me

Hey! Welcome to The Geography Blog. My name is Lauren and I am currently doing a BSc Geography degree at University. I decided to create a blog for all things geography related, whether that is new discoveries, random trivia, product reviews or posts about the various trips that I have/will go on.

Geography gets a bad reputation a lot of the time, because most of you probably had a boring geography teacher at some point in your life that made you want to tear out your hair and punch a globe (well, maybe nothing quite that dramatic), but I want to change that. Geography is NOT boring, I mean how can learning about the world you live in ever be truly boring? There's so much changing and moving and I can't understand how that can ever be dull. Maybe if we teach children about the different ecosystems and the things that are happening to our planet RIGHT NOW as I type this post then they will no longer be bored, but rather inspired and willing to go out and see what kind of cool things they can find. So I'm going to use this blog to try and promote geography as a subject, and if I can make one person inspired and willing to try something new then I'll be happy.

I want to go out and explore, whether that is just down the road from where I live, or a thousand miles away. To me it is vital to have these first-hand experiences because there is such a vast difference between reading something in a textbook and actually seeing it for yourself, to go out and battle with the elements gives a sense of accomplishment because you actually get to see how the world is changing around you.

So that's it for now, you know a little bit about me, and hopefully a little bit about why I think geography is an important and powerful subject. So don't write Geography off, don't think that just because you got drunk that one time in Magaluf that you've explored your surroundings and other cultures. Go outside right now (unless it's snowing or there's an earthquake or a slight chance you might die) and look at your garden (if you live in a block of flats in an urban jungle then I apologise, see if you can find a tree or something), look at the species that are growing and the conditions that allowed them to be there, or go to the coast and see just how powerful the sea is when it is eroding the cliffs, or how it is creating and destroying constantly. THAT IS GEOGRAPHY. So don't allow yourself to think of geography as being dull and soul destroying, but rather as something new and exciting. Go, have a look around you. You might just be surprised.
